The great toy buying debate has been of some concern for years now. Parents or other toy buying consumers struggle with whether they should be buying something educational, physically demanding or something to just act as a sense of entertainment. Of course, the biggest trick seems to be making sure the toy gets played with more than the box it came in or more than just once.

For many toy buyers however, the tried and true way to get the most bang for a buck when it comes to toys is to make sure it is creative. For this reason, shoppers visiting the CreativePlay4Less website are likely to be happy with the options they find. Not only that but one of the more popular things to find on the site is the new options available from the classic Crayola line.

Crayola Play Tent

The Crayola Play Tent
is the latest in fun, interactive and creative toys available for kids and young learners. These tents and tunnels have become a popular option for parents seeking a way to keep their kids busy, in a constructive manner. Trying to find anything that engages kids these days without involving a mobile device of some kind seems close to impossible. For many parents these play tents and tunnels have come at the perfect time.

The tunnels and tents can be combined for hours of creative and physical play time. The best part is the child can use it on his or her own or with other kids. Crayola and other brands have helped old fashioned fort making play time come back in style with the addition of these to their toy catalog line up. Even if this type of play session is only a small break from a child’s devotion to gadgets, TV or the couch it can help get him or her accustom to finding alternative sources of entertainment.

CreativePlay4Less

It isn’t just about Crayola or individual brands offering great new toys. In this case it is about finding a valuable resource to be able to turn to in order to find these toys. These aren’t just boring educational toys that will leave your child running back to his or her smart phone or iPad. The products you will find are meant to be educational but also more towards the fun and creative side. In addition to play tents and tunnels your child may find more of an interest in painting, pottery or piano playing.

The good news is that whatever your child’s creative interests may be, you are bound to find something to inspire them at this site. In fact even those youngsters who have not yet developed their true creative interests, this is a great way to discover what their interests may be. The entire purpose behind starting the site was to accomplish just this. As it gets harder to find out what kids could love that is creative, you can still find it at Amazon.

While technology in the classroom has been debatable for years, the times are changing. While even being allowed to bring certain devices like calculators into classes for certain math tests has been an issue for years, the technology available today is making even teachers rethink the importance and value of the tools. In fact, just a few years ago educators were having problems getting students to focus because things like smartphones and other mobile devices had become such a distraction in the class room. However, this may no longer be the case.

The trend may finally be leaning towards bringing laptops, tablets, cellphones, smartphones and other mobile devices into the classroom Of course, the trick to making this allowable is that the students must demonstrate some resulting benefits from this type of technology usage. If students are using their savvy technology and skills to enhance the learning experience, the gadgets will not only be permissible but encouraged.

What it All Means

The latest in technology currently may actually be helping students develop and learn. The iPad and Nook have become quite popular when it comes to classroom usage. The recent testing of this has shown to be effective in junior high school aged students as well as other ages. The trouble is at this point trying to have it any other way is tricky.

Young learners have become so dependent on their technology and gadgets they don’t grasp the concept of not being attached to them. This younger generation hasn’t known a time without mobile devices and does not understand how to learn without it. As the trend moves more towards finding a way to include technological gadgets, institutions that do not do so may be left behind in the Stone Age. Those who do see the value feel these gadgets are simply what textbooks once were when first introduced.

Making it Work

Some schools had started to try to include offering iPads for student use. By allowing students to bring in their own devices, schools save money. It is actually in Pennsylvania in the Allegheny Valley in which one high school is launching a program to see if switching to allow students to bring in these devices will help. The hope is that students will use their devices to further research a topic being taught if they feel they need a better understanding.

Of course, the hope is to eventually move towards using apps for further instruction or in place of printed, expensive textbooks. The trick will also be to determine how to keep students honest during exams. At this time the plan is to allow students to use the technology to study and learn but make them off limits during testing. For young learners the hope is that this will also be a great way to talk their parents into buying them the latest in technological gadgets. Those families who cannot afford such gadgets will have to apply for assistance or the schools will have to be able to provide devices, at least during school hours.

A recent statement released claims a software developing company has designed and developed educational software that has the capacity to respond to the young students using the programs. The point of all of this? Developers say the purpose is to be able to not just use the software to help educate but also to gauge how learners are responding to learning. In turn, this helps further understand what gets young learners excited and what areas are causing confusion and frustration.

This software is about more than simply deciding how the user feels. The software determines areas where a student may be feeling anxious or frustrated and then uses a system of questions to determine how to continue. The responses a pupil gives help the software decide how the course should carry out to help students get back on track.

Emotionally Sensitive Software?

The software, Auto tutor and Affective Auto Tutor, is meant to come close to the effective abilities a human teacher would have, by being able to detect if a student is enjoying themselves or actually being frustrated. How can this be possible? Obviously, this is about more than seeing actual emotion. The software is designed to read the facial expressions of students as well as read the body posture. Where this may actually be better than a human teacher is that once a negative reaction is detected, the software can then adapt and change the course of the lesson plan for the individual learner. Even human teachers wish they had the ability to alter class per student to help young learners comprehend material.

Developers of the software state the process was actually meant to help make using computers a more personal experience. For these developers it seems the one main thing that has been lacking in the computer-human experience is the personal element. Of course, such a large part of communication and connection is established through eye contact and verbal and non-verbal clues, like facial expressions and body language. Even simple gestures humans use help make the communication process personal. Until now this was lost with the human-technology experience.

Learning Software

The learning software does more for students and researchers than find out if a learner is enjoying themselves or not. This type of programming also means that the software can help gain insight into important aspects like motivation levels, or how to increase motivation levels. With any student, while reading, training and learning, the motivation levels either increase or decrease. Finding the key to staying motivated is instrumental to making the learning process more effective.

Amazingly, the design of this current software can also react as a teacher would to motivation. The mood or tone of the program alters to adapt to whether a student is engaged or not. In many ways this is also more than even a human teacher may be able to do. Right now, Auto Tutor is still in testing phases but the responses have been positive.

In the past, education meant the three Rs : Reading, Writing and ‘Rithmetic. These days, the three Rs have been replaced by STEM: science, technology, engineering and math as the core skills that children need to master to be successful in their future careers. The days of using paper based text products are coming to an end with digital books and other media replacing them. Not only are these more cost efficient, they are more successful in engaging potential students as well.

The White House announced two initiatives to jump start that innovation and to help break the trend of slow reform that has been going on for more than 20 years. The first initiative is the digital textbook reform and the second will be to study how using games can increase learning effort for the average American student. It is no secret that there are some major challenges facing the American education system, with students falling behind foreign students in virtually every category. According to the latest rankings, US students fell to 25th place in math and seventh in science. In addition, the number of youth who hold a college degree versus those who do not puts the US in the number 12 position.

Kids are continuing to drop out of school at alarming rates as well for a number of reasons. According to Child Trends, at least one in five minority children have dropped out of school before reaching graduation age. In some areas, both urban and rural, the number rises to around 50 percent. A separate study found that nearly all (90%) of these kids play at least one type of video game. The White House initiatives are hoping to find a way to bridge the popularity and pervasiveness of video games to the educational front, allowing for the better engagement of the students as well as better educational outcome on an individual basis. Video games, especially some that are specifically designed for education, engage the students and push them to use problem solving skills at their own pacing and current skill levels.

In 2011, the National Association of Educational Programs found that one in six African-American students in the fourth grade were not proficient in reading. Nationally, certain basic literacy skills are not progressing especially in lower income areas and among some minority students. But, according to research completed by the US Department of the Educational Ready to Learn Program Success for All, those very literacy skills could be enhanced by using interactive media games, especially if they were “hosted” by familiar characters. A game featuring Sesame Street’s key characters, for instance, was proven to improve literacy rates and scores and to improve STEM learning skills as well.

Next up will be the use of funding to study how to best implement the information from these studies and their implications. It will also be up to publishers to develop the online, digital textbooks that will be able to best capture the attention of students and to hold that attention for long enough to deliver the lesson.

Today’s toys are loaded with some of the most up-to-date technologies, and many of the toys that were unveiled at this year’s NY International Toy Fair are no different. This year’s toys include high-tech toys for babies such as fun music gear, as well as awesome toys for toddlers, tweens and everyone in between. Music seems to be the main theme of the day, and many of the toys that were unveiled involve music in one way or another. Take the Fisher-Price/Disney Master Moves Mickey (M3). This plush breakdancing Mickey Mouse is great for preschoolers who love music and dancing and has eight built-in songs. Mickey tells jokes when he falls down, which little ones just love.

Robots for Girls

Robot toys have long been considered toys for boys, but Mattel has introduced Fijit Friends Newbies and Yippits droids. These fun little robots sing, and the Yippits have three songs included and many games to play. These robots make the whole idea of robots being boys’ toys a thing of the past, and they get kids up and moving to the beat with fun dance moves.

More Fun, Musical Toys

Imperial Toy is going to be launching their Kidz Bop musical toys by the end of this year. Some of the toys include keyboards and guitars, and they can help get kids playing an instrument without having to take boring lessons. Kids can sing and play along with toned-down versions of their favorite tunes, and pretend that they are famous rock stars or competing on one of the popular reality television programs such as American Idol or X Factor. To add to the musical fun, ThinkGeek was promoting musical t-shirts and bags. These let wearers play musical instruments just by touching the pictures on the clothing. To get more volume, the Vibde It Bullet is a portable speaker that can connect to various devices including iPods and MP3 players.

Board Games Never Get Boring

Kids of all ages enjoy playing board games, and today’s games are more high-tech than ever. For instance, Hasbro is introducing the zAPPed board game series that works with a variety of applications. TWISTER Dance is a really neat twist on the original body-contorting game that has been loved by millions for decades. Families can play together, learning new dance moves to songs by Ke$ha, Britney Spears and Willow Smith.

Technology-Based Toys

Many other toys were introduced at this year’s toy fair, including a variety of educational toys for children ranging from infants to tweens. Crayola introduced their Digital Light Designer that allows kids to use a stylus to draw fun pictures on a dome that glows. Dr. Seuss iOS and Android board games were on display, as well as Lazer Tag Blasters and the latest Nukotoy trading cards.

The more technology we have, the more it is going to be in the toys our children use. We can take advantage of technology to give kids fun learning experiences. Video games aren’t like they once were either, and now kids often have to be physically active when playing their favorite games. Technology doesn’t just have to be for big kids, and today’s toys are proving just that.

When it comes to making education fun for kids, parents already know they can rely on the Funbrain products. This year however, the company also got recognition for being a top company when it comes to homeschooling. This year’s annual Top 100 Educational Websites of 2012 included Funbrain. This honor is based on the feedback gathered from Homeschool.com and focuses mostly on the 3-11 age group. This is quite an honor as the Homeschool.com website is the top in its class for online homeschool learning.

Funbrain has been making it easier for kids in the category to learn by offering visitors access to free educational games, puzzles, books and even comics that make learning fun. Not only are the little learners the focus but so are the parents taking on the teaching role. Funbrain offers tools and tips for parents who are helping their kids learn at home. Of course this is a much overdue honor for the company that has been making learning fun for over 15 years now.

Making the Most of Funbrain

Funbrain’s history dates back to 15 years ago when it started offering resources for young learners. The point was and still is to give kids a safe zone where they can learn but still have fun. Making education fun and enjoyable makes kids much more eager to do so. The general focus was math and reading but has branched out a bit.

However, for Funbrain, this honor is exactly the point of what they do. A publisher for the company released a statement that Funbrain is honored to have made it on this annual list. For parents and young learners the resources Funbrain offers are invaluable. This includes not just ways to learn in math and reading but to also test developed skills.

What else would you expect from the site responsible for first showcasing “Diary of a Wimpy Kid.” Funbrain now also appeals to parents who want to start their kids off younger and offering things for the 2-6 age group. With recognition like this it seems the company can only press on and continue to develop useful resources for young homeschool learners and their parents.

Imagine beating out the competition against 130 companies from across the globe. Well that’s what Seoige Technology has almost done, after its SavvyBear.com landed in the final six for the Propeller Venture Accelerator Program. The competition is to reward the top contenders with a sizable seed start up investment. On top of that, selected companies also get training, mentorship as well as important office space to help continue their design and development.

This time around, over 130 promising companies tried out for a space among the final six. Recently the decisions were made as were the final cuts. In the final six is the SavvyBear.com along with five other promising young companies or design and developments. With focus on reaching out to children for an educational but fun way to learn, this company has all the right intentions.

About SavvyBear

SavvyBear was actually only designed and developed recently. The concept is that of John and Sandra Joyce and was only set up last year. To make it this far within a year is quite an impressive feat. The focus of SavvyBear for the Joyces’ was to make sure children could get involved and learn cognitive skills. Of course the main point was that kids should be able to learn these skills and abilities in a fun and safe environment that did nothing but encourage their learning.

The bottom line was that the Joyces’ saw a need for this and made it their focus. The good news is that so far their focus has paid off. Having this type of capital and opportunity to further develop and launch SavvyBear products should open up all kinds of new doors for the couple and their kid focused company.

One reason why SavvyBear has become the sweetheart of the final six is that the focus is educational, not just for entertainment value. Already CEO John Joyce has reported that the office space at Propeller program has been a huge help. With a concept and a dream, this opportunity at Propeller could be exactly what’s needed to take this educational toys and game company to the next level.

Need to learn more about the world of finance around you? Literally, the entire world? Well, design and development companies are working hard to make that their focus. Take for example the mobile app Leverage Up, which helps users learn about economics and trading across the globe through challenging questions on the topic. This isn’t for users who aren’t willing to learn however. The questions get trickier and more technical, and are designed to actually stump users.

For this particular app however, it isn’t just about users learning on the topic or killing time. This system is also meant to be a way for recruitment so that organizations like Wall Street can connect to the best and brightest in the industry today. Those willing to learn the history as well as the technical aspects of the market could find themselves competing for a job as well as high score.

Why the Focus?

For designs like Leverage Up, the company behind the app feels too many talented young minds may be getting overlooked based on how the recruiting process is currently done. Of course not all financial based online gaming or mobile apps will be developed with job hunting and recruitment in mind, but this is starting to be an important focus. Especially, since many feel the recruiting should now be spanning the globe not just a company’s backyard.

In fact China, as well as the rest of the continent of Asia, may often get left out during global recruiting even though there is much potential in the hiring world there. The goal is to continue to help train and develop traders and bankers, as well as close the gap when it comes to global hiring. The best part is companies who wish to be involved simply pay a fee to get connected. In addition to Leverage Up, the same company also released an online trading game that should help spotlight potential investment bankers from around the world. How else can you get a feel for if a potential employee has working knowledge of worldwide currencies without putting it to the test?

It really is kind of like the virtual world version of the classic kid’s sandbox. Of course, one that also has an annual summit that takes place each year in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Unlike many other approaches to connecting kids through communication, learning and play this method manages to include a much wider age group including toddlers up to almost teens.

The Annual Sandbox Summit of 2012 will unite professionals and experts in the fields of toys, gaming and the more popular than ever area of mobile devices. Experts from several different fields and companies will be present and speaking, including giants like Disney Publishing Worldwide. Topics will range from eBooks to the evolution of gaming, and everything in between.

Understanding the Importance

The main point of the summit this year is to make sure professionals in the industry are aware of the ongoing and growing importance of gaming and digital technology. Most importantly, technological advances have made it possible for kids to still connect with reading and learning, but by making a completely different experience out of it.

To help others understand the possibilities now available, workshops will be held throughout the course of the Summit as well. These interactive workshops are the best way to give others a working knowledge of how newly developed and designed products are used. Most importantly, it gives insight to how these developments are teaching and inspiring kids these days.

Another focus of the conference this year will be apps. While these have already become important over the past few years, the need to learn to develop them even further is a present focus.

The bottom line is that the summit once again is intended to help others gauge the value of technology with kids’ learning these days. In order to stay current for designing toys that fit into this field, involvement with the conference is crucial. As the world of kids’ toys and learning concepts change, the best way to understand it and be part of it is to have a hands-on working knowledge.
